About Urostomy
A urostomy is an opening that allows your kidneys to expel urine through an opening in the abdomen. This excretory diversion essentially bypasses the bladder. The doctor will create an ileal conduit through a small piece of the ileum. He will use it as a reservoir, which connects ureters to the outside of the body.
Because you won’t be able to control the flow of urine from the stoma, you have to wear an ostomy pouch over it the entire time. This pouch will collect urine, allowing you to engage in your routine activities without worrying about leakage.
There can be different types of urostomy stomas. Your ostomy care nurse will tell you which pouching system suits you well.

About the urostomy pouching system
There are two parts of a urostomy pouching system: a pouch and a wafer. A two-piece ostomy pouching system consists of a separable pouch and a wafer. A one-piece ostomy pouching system, however, comes with these two elements readily integrated so that they are not separable.
You may have to use a different type of ostomy pouching system at home than the one that you use at the hospital. That is because the stoma changes its size over time. It usually takes six to eight weeks for the stoma to settle to a permanent shape and size.

While you are in the hospital, you will learn how to take care of your stoma and the ostomy pouch. Initially, you may have to use a two-piece ostomy pouch and an extender. This extender goes between the skin barrier and the ostomy pouch to enhance the capacity of the pouching system. This extender also makes it easy to remove the ostomy pouch and place it back.
At home, you can use a one-piece or two-piece ostomy pouch, depending on your preferences and requirements. A home care nurse may visit you to help you learn how to take care of your stoma and the ostomy pouch. You can change the type of ostomy pouching system as your stoma heals and becomes smaller. The ostomy care nurse can suggest the right type of pouch after looking at how your stoma heals.
Your first appointment with the ostomy care nurse will come after two weeks of surgery. During this appointment, the nurse will set a schedule for the upcoming appointment. You have to make sure to follow that schedule to keep a track of your stoma and its impact on overall health.
During the initial recovery after surgery, you may start to lose some of your body weight. After three to six months, you will start gaining some weight. There may also be some changes in your abdomen while you lose weight. These changes may result in your pouching system being unable to fit around your stoma or over the skin. The nurse will recommend a different ostomy pouching system to ensure a proper fitting in this regard.
